This is one of the first drawings I created whilst getting to grips moving from paper to digital. I was blown away by how much detail I could get into a drawing: the freedom of zooming in, adding lots of characters and details, and being able to play around with perspective.

I wanted to create something that evoked the incredible architecture of London's Natural History Museum, specifically the magnificent Hintze Hall. Since 1881 it's exhibited various massive specimens: a sperm whale skeleton, followed by an African elephant, then 'Dippy' the diplodocus, and finally the current specimen 'Hope' the blue whale.

The colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) is the largest invertebrate in the world, found in the deep seas surrounding Antarctica. They can grow to a length of 10 metres, but are believed to be able to grow even bigger in the deepest waters. Their eyes are the largest in the animal kingdom, with an estimated diameter of 30-40 cm.
