‘peacock’

The Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus) is the national bird of India, where it originates. The species has since been introduced to many other countries including the UK.

Peacocks are male peafowl, famous for their stunningly beautiful and iridescent plumage. They are significant in various mythologies and cultures around the world, often symbolising beauty, immortality, power and protection.

In Hindu mythology, the peacock is associated with the god of war Kartikeya and Kamauri, the warrior goddess.

Alexander the Great was mesmerised by their beauty, and adopted them as a symbol of his power. Likewise, Christianity adopted the peacock as a symbol of the pope’s power. Many early Christian mosaics and paintings feature the peacock: the “eyes” of its tail feathers symbolise the all-seeing Christian God.
