‘green man’
The Green Man is a nature motif embraced throughout history in various forms and in many cultures around the world. He represents rebirth, resurrection and growth, and can be found in ancient Roman villas, Indian temples and the churches and cathedrals of Europe.
In Britain, he's captured the imagination for thousands of years, symbolising the coming of spring and plentiful harvests. His face adorns the signs of many inns and pubs, perhaps a link to Britain's Roman history: 'Bacchus' is the Roman nature god of wine, festivity, agriculture and fertility.
For this illustration I was heavily inspired by Princess Mononoke and Willow. I imagined miniature 'green men' on a quest to protect their forests under the all-seeing gaze of the Green Man...
