‘underwater discovery’

This was initially a study of my hand, but I decided to give it an underwater setting. I loved the idea of discovering a lost Greek colossus, with scuba divers dwarfed by its size.

Colossi were enormous Greek and Roman statues. The most famous was the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Built in around 280 B.C., it depicted the sun god Helios and was over 100 feet tall.

Modern colossi include the Statue of Liberty at the entrance to New York Harbour, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, and the tallest in the world: the Statue of Unity in India, 182 metres tall.

Look out for one of the most amazing animals in the world, the highly-intelligent mimic octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus). Found in the shallow waters of the Indo-Pacific, it mimics a wide variety of marine animals (especially venomous ones) to avoid predation.
